Origin & History
Developed in England, the Springer takes its name from the way it springs birds from cover. English Springers became valued as versatile sporting dogs that could search for game, flush it within range, and retrieve after the shot. Field-bred and show-bred lines can differ substantially in appearance and working drive, so hunters should look closely at the dogs behind a litter.
Hunting Style
A Springer quarters ground in front of the gun, using its nose to locate birds and push them into flight. It is a flushing dog, not a pointing dog. Field-bred Springers excel in brush and varied upland cover, and many retrieve on land and in water. Good training keeps that enthusiasm within gun range and builds a reliable retrieve.
Temperament & Training
Springers are generally affectionate, alert, and eager to work with people. They learn well with clear, consistent training and frequent field time. Their energy is a feature in the cover, but without exercise and mental work they can be a handful at home. Practice recall, quartering, steadiness, and delivery to hand early and often.
Coat & Field Care
The feathered coat needs brushing and a check for burrs, seeds, and ticks after a hunt. Pay particular attention to the ears and feet after working wet or heavy cover. Coat colors commonly include liver and white or black and white, sometimes with tan markings.
Living with an English Springer Spaniel
For a household that gets outside and makes room for training, the Springer can be a warm, enthusiastic family dog as well as a serious hunting partner. Choose a breeder whose dogs do the kind of work you want to do, and plan to give this dog an outlet beyond hunting season.
